While tracking the histories of each (main) halo, it appears that the halo mass of the small groups at the present day (snap_id = 99) experienced a decline in mass on average no matter i chose M200 or the summation of GroupMassType as halo mass indicator.
I have no idea about it, the mechanism behind the decrease in mass for the main halo remains unclear to me.

Perhaps you can pick a few individual examples from your low-mass bin, and look at them in more detail, to try to see what is going on.
