At which scale are gas physics resolved in AREPO moving mesh?

Dear Illustris team,

I am looking for a practical formula to determine at which scale the gas physics are resolved in Illustris (AREPO). My understanding is that this is based on moving mesh; therefore, it seems like the size of the Voronoi cells could be appropriate. Is this the case? And if so, can we approximate this scale as two times the radius of the cell, considering a spherical volume?

Thak you

Yes this is a typical definition, that the "size" of a Voronoi gas cell is the radius of the sphere with the equivalent volume.

Since cell shapes are regularized in the simulation to try to stay roughly spherical, this is an OK approximation.

Since the gas cells have roughly constant mass, their size is a strong function of density. You could fit a relation between size and density to understand the scales at which gas dynamics are resolved, as a function of density.
