In Table 1 in this article (https://arxiv.org/pdf/1405.2921.pdf) The baryons softening length is mentioned in DM only simulations. However, there are no baryons in these simulations. What is the reason?

Indeed that is a mistake, it should just be --. I suggest to refer to the data release documentation for Illustris.
